The Rise of Self Storage
Self storage has been a popular industry in Australia and the United States for most of the 20th century, but it’s only been in the last 30 years that self storage has really taken off in this country. This is mostly due to huge changes in the way that people live.
The most obvious reason is the rise of consumerism. Now we are surrounded with more possessions than ever before, and we are constantly encouraged to buy more. Many of the things we purchase are of disposable quality, like cheap clothes and flat pack furniture, but canny Brits are reluctant to truly dispose of it. The hoarding instinct is a part of our national culture, and we were ill prepared for an influx of cheap goods in the post-war, globalized economy. The result is that we have on average 6 times more possessions than our forebears in the recent past. Many of our Manchester storage customers rent a storage unit simply because they’ve run out of space but they want to hang on to their possessions.
Of course that isn’t the only reason. Now, travel is cheaper than ever. It’s within the reach of most people to get on a plane and travel thousands of miles away, and many people take advantage of this to go on long journeys, especially in their youth. However, mum and dad might not have the space to look after their possessions. So they end up storing their unneeded things in our Manchester storage facility until they get back.
Sometimes mum and dad just won’t live close enough for their grown up children to keep extra possessions at their place, for any reason. This is another major ethnographic change that has lead to the rise in self-storage. If people live far away from home and they’ve accumulated more possessions than they need, then they may very well require an outside storage facility to deal with the overspill.
This is particularly likely to be the case if they live in a large city. In the last few decades the urban population has swollen, and this trend looks unlikely to change anytime soon. This leads to increased demands on space, and people living in smaller and smaller places. Naturally they want to use as much of their space as possible for living, and as little as possible for storage. Manchester is growing city, and this is one of the main reasons that Manchester storage facilities are particularly popular.
Lastly, the economy is changing and many people are starting their own businesses, either through choice or necessity. This change has been particularly pronounced over the last decade. Usually these entrepreneurs will start a business at home, but if the business becomes a success then it will quickly outgrow the home and require additional space. To keep costs low, many of these businesses will move into local storage units. A large proportion of our Manchester storage customers are entrepreneurs who have experienced this phenomenon.
